Meeting with Nature
1 don't photograph insects and flowers for any scientific studies. I do it for the purpose of portraiture, like with peopIe. For insects and flowers in their natural surroundings, I use natural Iight. I seldom use flash as the main Iight. |
I enjoy the coincidental meeting with nature, and I like to incorporate the natural lighting as I saw it. Thus, I use flash mainly as fill Light.
For fill light, the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX provides really good Iighting balance. In the full Auto mode, it gives the correct fill-flash output. With FP flash, I can blur the background by using a fast sync speed and a large aperture. It really suits my flash picture-taking style. When I photograph an insect that keeps moving, I have no time to keep changing the camera and flash settings. I would need an assistant to help me.
But with the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX and a Speedlite 550EX, I can obtain studio lighting effects in the field. The lighting is different from that used for photographs taken for scientific purposes. Since the system is wireless, I can set it up easily without bothering with cumbersome wires. It is a great time saver and a major tool in the field. |

Yoshiaki Kobayashi
Born in 1969 in Tokyo. Insects and nature are his main subjects. His love for nature is reflected in his photographs. He also writes about photography techniques for camera magazines and teaches at the Canon EOS Gakuen School for amateur photographers in Japan. In 1999, he held a photo exhibition titled "Small Life-Insects at Leisure" at the Canon Salon.
