Application 8 : Macrophotographie

Dragonfly

Masayuki Kato

In Miyagi Prefecture, I photographed Japan's smallest dragonfly, measuring only 1.5 cm (0.6 in.) in length. For macro shots, Eye Control is a great boon. With the EOS-3's 45 focusing points, I can focus the subject by Eye Control and compose the picture at the same time. It's much easier than with cameras having only one or five horizontal focusing points.

And there is no cosine error, which occurs with other cameras when the picture is recomposed after the focus is locked. This is a godsend in the case of close-up photography, when precise focusing is essential. In addition, E-TTL autoflash makes fill-flash a cinch. If this picture was taken without flash, the sun reflected off the water would make the dragonfly look like a dark blotch due to the backlight. But with the Macro Ring Lite providing fill flash, the dragonfly's crimson body was captured.

To compensate for the reflected light on the water, the fill flash was set to a plus (+) amount. Also, the FE lock button obtains a flash spot metering reading and locks the flash output even while the background's light level changes. It is very useful for fill flash in close-up photography.
