Application 2 : Photographie d'object

Hiroyuki Yamamoto

The Basics of Product Photography

1. The lighting is basically centered on one main light. The framing, product position, and camera position are first set. Then the main light is positioned.

2. All light sources other than the main light serve as fill light. They are used to create dimension and soften shadows. They are positioned to make the lens surface look good.

3. Speedlites for 35mm cameras usually give a spotlight effect. To diffuse and soften the flash, tracing paper is used to cover the flash head.

For this product shoot, the Speedlite's zoom head was set manually to the widest coverage and tracing paper was placed a short distance in front of the flash head. This increased the SpeedÌite's light source area. Since the photograph was to be published in a paper catalog, a Wratten CCO5Y gelatin filter was placed on the camera lens to suppress the bluish cast.
