Application 1 : Night Shot

Night Ride

I intended to portray the feeling of motion through movement of color and gain some sense of feeling for the ride. A wide camera position close in on a biker riding his Harley at night through a city street on slow transparency film was about as difficult as I could have thought possible.

For the shot to work I needed to mount both camera and lighting systems on the bike and trigger the camera from another vehicle. The system had to be physically small and light.

The Speedlite 550EX proved to be perfect for the job. The small hot shoe stand coming standard with it, incorporated a 1/4 in. tripod thread in its base. This could be screwed to ball heads attached to clamps and pointed in almost any position. Ideal for a foot peg or a crash bar.

Each head of the flash was manually zoomed in or out for a desired flash coverage angle to light only those areas that I wanted to be illuminated. Further to this, the modeling light allowed me to preview and fine-tune the flash coverage. The EOS-3 activates (via an infrared pulse signal of the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2) a high frequency stroboscopic effect in the flash that turns the flash tube on for a second to show you its coverage. You can see the effect immediately. It is a really practical feature.
AII Speedlites were placed on the slave setting and set manually to the required output levels. The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 was placed (via the 0ff-camera Shoe Cord 2) in a position which enabled slave Speedlites to be triggered reliably. The Wireless Controller LC-4 Receiver was turned in the forward direction toward the car that I would be triggering from. We would drive ahead of the bike and shoot as we passed the appropriate Iocations. The beauty of this system is that it is small, portable and light. Having set outputs and colors, the installation seems so much faster and simpler. It should help us all achieve the results we're looking for. All for the picture.
